The name Valerian means being healthy in Latin. It has a strong flavor and the ancient Greeks used it for many medical problems and for centuries it was used for neurological diseases. It belongs to the family of Valerianidon. Valerian is a perennial plant with rhizome which remains alive when shoots and leaves are dried. It has pinnate leaves and its flowers are small white or pink. It prefers moist and cold climates and is self-planted in some areas of Greece. It blooms in summer to autumn.
