The leek is a biennial plant and the first year long lance shaped leaves are grown by a shoot and a fleshy base which reaches up to 40-50cm. The leek is resistant to low temperatures. Hippocrates was the first who discovered the beneficial properties of this plant. Today, the leek is known as diuretic,is used against feet and hand swelling. Also, it is beneficial to remove cellulite as it prevents from fluid retention. Leek contains calcium, iodine and vitamins B1, B2, B6, C and is mainly used in cooking and as a flavoring additive in various salads.
