The fennel is a perennial plant and grows mainly on the coast of the Mediterranean. It is cultivated in other places around the world, in areas with dry soil, near sea shores and river banks. The fennel is an aromatic and delicious spice with many uses in cooking, in the pharmaceutical and in the distillery. It is a main ingredient of Indian cuisine and of the cuisine of the Middle East. In Italy, it composes the taste of sausage and meatballs. In distillery, it is used in the production of raki and other beverages. The fennel contains anethole the component which causes the beneficial and healing properties. It is a source of vitamins, magnesium ,potassium and phosphorus. The fennel as decoction or beverage helps on bronchitis,on bloating and on intestinal disorders generally. It can also be used as a mild laxative. On previous years, it had been used for eye irritations as poultice.
