The shepherd's purse is a small annual plant that grows in Eastern Europe and Asia Minor. In modern herbal medicine the shepherd's purse is mainly used as a hemostatic. The plant contains amines (Acetylcholine, choline, histamine, tyramine) which have strong hemostatic effects. Therefore this plant is particularly useful in cases of frequent nosebleeds, internal bleedings (hemoptysis, blood in urine etc.), particularly excessive menstrual bleeding, and for treatment of hemorrhoids and varicose veins.
