The licorice is a shrub with height up to 50-100 cm., with branched roots that reach 1-2m. These are used for therapeutic purposes. Licorice is grown in regions with low altitude and in uncultivated lands. In Chinese medicine, licorice acts as an expectorant, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic. The herb has beneficial effects on gastritis, peptic ulcer and colic. It has also a positive effect on bronchitis, pneumonia, cough and stress problems. It is diuretic and is recommended for diabetes and cholesterol.
