The fumitory is an herbaceous, annual, native to Europe and North Africa plant and grows in Asia, North America and Australia. Its name is because of the fact that it resembles the tobacco plant and its properties were known to ancient Greeks and Arabs. The fumitory contains seven alkaloids, fumaric acid, tannic acid, potassium, amino-acids and resin. The herb acts as a diuretic, laxative, smoothing and as a mild hypnotic or bitter tonic, which acts in internal muscles, increasing the secretion of bile.
