Basil is an aromatic annual herbaceous plant of the family Labiatae. In cooking, are used mainly dried leaves of broadleaf variety which smell likes as that of anise.It flavors various roasts, salads, stews, soups etc. and fits well in sauces which based on fresh tomatoes. In Italian cuisine, pasta pesto sauce is based on the basil.
