The burdock has large, green leaves (can reach 70cm in length). The root, the leaves and the seeds are useful. The name comes from the Greek word bear and was considered effective as a general tonic from ancient times to the middle ages worldwide. The burdock's leaves are currently used in herbal medicine especially for treating skin diseases such as acne and eczema. The leaves are used externally as a poultice.
